Energy market impact

The current situation presents challenges as energy markets are already burdened by issues in the Strait of Hormuz.

Unlike blocked tankers, damaged infrastructure may take months to repair and could lead to a permanent loss of capacity.

Less available supply when lanes reopen raises concerns about prolonged disruptions and increased global inflation.

Tamas Varga, an analyst at PVM, notes this is a new reality for the market.

On Thursday, global oil prices rose sharply, with Brent crude reaching $119 a barrel after attacks on Saudi Arabian and Kuwaiti refineries.

European natural gas prices surged around 20% following damage to Qatar’s Ras Laffan, a critical liquefied natural gas facility.

Missing data

Investors are struggling with missing data, as rapid developments complicate accurate damage assessments.

Varga described the situation as a “nightmare,” where calculations become obsolete quickly.

Traders are seeking reliable data by hiring security consultants and using their tanker fleets for monitoring.

The conflict escalated when Israel targeted South Pars, prompting Iranian missile strikes on Gulf energy facilities.

President Trump warned of severe retaliation against Iran should attacks on Qatar resume, while Iran cautioned against further strikes on its infrastructure.

Qatar reported significant damage at Ras Laffan, which is vital for global LNG supply.

The facility was already facing operational halts due to earlier drone attacks, and continued destruction could worsen supply crises.

Ras Laffan represents a major industrial hub in Qatar’s northern region with extensive infrastructure.
