The Islamic State group has confirmed to be behind the Kabul Military Hospital attack that killed more than 20 people and injured at least 16

Islamic State militants moved in on the 400-bed facility with guns and bombs with two large explosions detonated at the building’s boundary before gunfire broke out.

Among those killed include three women, a child and three Taliban guards.

The Taliban’s spokesperson says the fighters had managed to enter the facility after the first explosion at the entrance gate.

Five I.S. attackers were killed in the explosion, with Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid revealing Taliban guards prevented them from getting into the hospital

Meanwhile, the Taliban’s own fighters were able to stop any further casualties after being dropped at the hospital by helicopter and killing almost all of the attackers.

The attack is the latest in a string of events that have rocked Afghanistan since the United States departure back in August.
