Democracy at risk? Hong Kong passes controversial reform laws
Hong Kong’s controversial electoral reform laws have been passed by lawmakers, in what is a blow for democracy in the region.
The new reforms are designed to prevent any individuals China believes are “unpatriotic” from securing positions of political leadership within the government.
The reforms will ensure that all candidates who put their hand up to run in future elections will be subject to a rigorous vetting process.
The bill was passed with overwhelming support in Hong Kong’s Legislative Council, which is filled with Beijing allies after opposition members walked out last year.
The legislation has faced intense backlash from many western nations, including the UK and the US.
Hong Kong city executive Carrie Lam says the new laws will not discriminate against people for their political views but rather rule out any “non-patriots”.
