Dead celebrities marked as having Twitter Blue verified accounts

The Twitter accounts of some dead celebrities are being marked as subscribers to the Twitter Blue service.

This is adding further confusion after legacy verification ticks were removed from accounts last week.

The accounts of Lakers star Kobe Bryant, actor Chadwick Boseman and rapper Mac Miller have all appeared with the Twitter Blue check mark.

The explanation on each page read that the accounts were “verified because they are subscribed to Twitter Blue and verified their phone number.”

Users must now pay an $8 monthly subscription to “Twitter Blue” to obtain a verification check mark, and organisations $1,000 a month for a gold verification mark.
