High-profile New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has resigned following an inquiry that found that he sexually harassed several women

Continuing to deny the allegations, Cuomo says “the best way I can help is to step aside”.

With the change of leadership, Kathy Hochul will be the first female Governor of New York state when Cuomo’s resignation happens in 14 days’ time.

Cuomo has faced significant pressure over the past week to step down, particularly from fellow Democrats including U-S President Joe Biden.

Cuomo’s reputation at stake

The outgoing Governor built up quite a reputation throughout the peak of the pandemic as residents tuned in to hear his Covid updates.

In a wide-sweeping, independent investigation – the New York Attorney General’s Office concluded that Cuomo sexually harrassed 11 women.

The women say he made sexual comments, inappropriately touched or groped them, and kissed them without consent.

Criminal investigations are still ongoing as investigations continue.
