Fatal plane crash

The crash occurred during takeoff from Puerto Leguizamo near Peru’s border, as reported by Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the plane may have hit the runway’s end before a wing clipped a tree.

The incident caused a fire and triggered explosions from onboard devices.

Local residents were the first responders, transporting survivors to safety on motorcycles.

Military vehicles later arrived but faced challenges accessing the crash site.

According to military head Hugo Alejandro Lopez, 57 survivors were hospitalised, with 30 reported in stable condition.

President Gustavo Petro expressed frustration over bureaucratic obstacles hindering military modernization.

He called for immediate action to ensure the safety of young service members.

Condolences and calls for investigation came from several candidates in Colombia’s upcoming presidential election.

A Lockheed Martin spokesperson pledged support for Colombia’s investigation into the incident.

Hercules C-130 planes have been in service since the 1950s, with Colombia modernising its fleet over the years.
