Climate disasters pushing more of us to relocate

Climate disasters cause more people to move and relocate than conflict and violence do, according to figures published by the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC).

The number of people who were forced to flee their homes and countries as a result of natural disasters rose to the highest level in a decade in 2020.

The report found that over 30 million individuals migrated domestically that year as a result of weather events, and a record 55 million people moved in total.

It’s estimated that costs associated with migration cost economies around $20 billion in 2020.

It follows countries like China and India experiencing extreme cyclones, monsoon rains and floods.

1.7 million were forced to evacuate in the US following the most active hurricane season ever recorded.
