China will ramp up military spending this year but the United States budget is still four times greater.

China will increase military spending by more than seven per cent this year to sit around the $225 billion mark.

The United States’ budget is four times greater but analysts believe China downplays how much it spends on defence.

Outgoing Premier told the National People’s Congress meeting in China that external threats are escalating.

Saying the “armed forces should intensify military training” and be more prepared.

This week’s NPC meeting will also formalise Xi’s leadership of the country, as he will be elected president of China and head of the armed forces.
