Canada’s Prime Minister has met with the country’s indigenous leaders to apologise for not attending the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation two weeks prior

The day honours the indigenous children forced to assimilate in state-backed residential schools.

The PM was seen holidaying with his family during the mourning and says he regrets not attending the sacred event.

The First Nations site is located close to the residential school where the unmarked graves of 215 children were uncovered in May.

The Prime Minister promised to provide compensation to the children who were forcibly removed from care under the school program.
