Nine people have died in Syria following a US raid to target Al Qaeda’s leader

Special operations troops carried out the risky pre-dawn commando assault in north-west Syria early on Thursday.

The Pentagon has described the mission as “successful”.

But there are reports from the scene that adults and children may have been killed or injured.

In a late night statement, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby says there were no US casualties.

No details have been provided on who the target was or whether it involved ground troops and helicopters.

There are around 1,000 US military troops in Syria supporting the mission against ISIS.
