Iconic Japanese volcano erupts, locals told to stay clear

Japan’s Mount Aso has erupted, but locals have been told to stay away

One of the world’s biggest volcanoes, the Japanese Mount Aso, has began erupting.

The eruption took place at around 11:43 am local time.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage at the popular tourist destination.

But, the meteorological agency raised the alert level for the volcano to level 3 on a scale of five. It also warned of large volcanic blocks and flows scattering within a 1 kilometre range from the mountain’s crater.

Locals have been warned not to approach the mountain.
