Biden warns Putin: “I will not stand by and let him abuse those rights”

US President Joe Biden says he’ll bring up Russia’s alleged human rights abuses when he meets with Vladimir Putin next month.

It follows the White House announcing last week that the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders will occur on June 16 in Geneva.

Biden says he’ll be “meeting with President Putin in Geneva, making it clear that the US will not stand by and let him abuse those rights.”

It’s expected that the two leaders will discuss many issues, as the countries work to mend their rocky relations.

The White House says, despite key differences in opinion on issues regarding Ukraine and the US general election interference, Biden wants to establish a clear method of communication going forward.

In April, the US imposed sanctions and diplomatic expulsions on Russia over the country’s alleged human rights abuses in Crimea.
