Biden increases refugee cap in a blow to Trump’s legacy

US President Joe Biden has announced his administration will officially lift the cap on refugees after weeks of bipartisan backlash.

The cap will be raised to 62,500 after previously being lowered by Donald Trump to 15,000.

Last month, Biden revised the eligibility criteria for resettlement, which was an important step towards reversing Trump’s restrictions.

Biden says the new limit “erases the historically low number set by the previous administration.”

The White House believes Trump’s cap “does not reflect America’s values as a nation that welcomes and supports refugees.”
