Bessent did not specify what a final agreement might entail and noted he has yet to discuss the matter with President Donald Trump, who previously indicated he would need to approve any deal personally.
The ongoing negotiations follow a period of heightened tariff tensions, with both nations having imposed significant duties on one another.
The deadline for reaching an agreement is set for August 12. Currently, the U.S. has reduced its tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, while China has decreased its rate from 125% to 10%.
Negotiation Challenges
Bessent emphasised the complexity of the negotiations, acknowledging the difficulty posed by the Chinese negotiating stance.
Both sides remain cautious as critical issues like oil purchases from Iran and technology transfers to Russia add another layer of complexity to the discussions.
