As Covid cases continue to soar throughout China, Beijing residents are preparing for worst

The city’s biggest district has begun mass testing, with many residents fearing the government will enforces a Shanghai-style lockdown

Food and other supplies are being snapped up, with fresh meat, vegetables and noodles in particular demand.

In Shanghai, the city’s 25 million residents have been locked down for weeks, unable to leave their homes, and fuelling anger online.

Beijing’s major supermarket chains say they have ramped up their inventory and the number of staff assigned to sorting and delivery.

Coming off the back of fears Beijing is on the verge of a strict Covid lockdown, Chinese shares also tumbled on Monday, with the blue-chip index closing down 4.9 per cent.
