Australia’s sporting community is in shock after 24-year-old Liam Hampson was found dead in Spain

Tragic news for Australia’s NRL community today.

Redcliffe Queensland Cup player Liam Hampson has been found dead in Barcelona after travelling to Europe for end-of-season celebrations.

Concerns were first raised for Hampson when he went missing for more than 24 hours after last being spotted at the Sala Apolo nightclub.

A number of friends and family members posted to social media, pleading for help and any information regarding his whereabouts.

Alexander Brimson was the first to raise the alarm, and says Hampson’s disappearance was “very out of character”.

Barcelona police later confirmed the 24-year-old’s body had been found on a nightclub floor.

It’s believed he died after falling from a substantial height.

There’s been an outpouring of grief as Australia’s sporting community processes this tragedy.

The 24-year-old’s father Brett confirmed his son’s death on social media, saying he woke up to news “no one wants to hear”, adding the family is “devastated to find out Liam had an accident and sadly has not survived.”

The statement adds, “we are heartbroken to say the least. Liam had a heart of gold and was a much loved son, brother, grandson, uncle and friend. Words can not express our grief”.

Meanwhile, the family has also extended their thoughts to the group of friends who were travelling with Hampson.

His sister, Tiarna says her brother’s teammates made sure “his last days were the best of his life”.

So truly a devastating situation and one that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact, Britt.
