An Australian Professor, who was being held captive in Papua New Guinea, has been released and flown home

Professor Bryce Barker and several others were taken by a group of armed criminals in a remote part of the nation.

The criminals initially demanded a ransom of approximately $1.5 million in exchange for releasing the hostages, but a far smaller amount is believed to have been paid.

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape thanked those involved in securing the release of the three hostages, but did warn against future situations.
