World number one tennis star Novak Djokovic has been denied entry to Australia over an issue with his visa

The tennis player arrived into Melbourne on Wednesday around midnight local time, where authorities noticed a mistake on his application.

Mr Djokovic was due to play in the Australian Open being held in Melbourne, after being exempted from vaccination rules.

He will be flown out of the country later on Thursday but his lawyers will challenge the decision, Australian media report.

It is understood the Serbian man has been detained at Melbourne Airport on Thursday morning for more than seven hours and is set to be sent home.
