An Australian couple is in critical condition after falling 10 meters from a fortress wall while on vacation in Dubrovnik.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when a 34-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman reportedly fell from a medieval clifftop fortress near the Croatian coastal city.

Both individuals were rushed to Dubrovnik General Hospital, where the woman remains in a critical condition in intensive care. Her companion is also in serious condition after undergoing emergency surgery.

Dr. Ivan Bencic, a trauma specialist at Dubrovnik General Hospital, stated in an interview with Croatian media outlet HRT that the woman had suffered a spinal cord injury, cerebral damage, and fractures in her vertebrae.

According to a spokeswoman for Dubrovnik-Neretva police, the couple had been intoxicated and engaged in cuddling or kissing when they fell. The authorities are treating the fall as an accident.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that Australia is providing consular assistance to the two injured individuals in Croatia.
