Aus government failing to reach agreement on net-zero

Published

on

As the COP-26 climate event approaches at rapid pace, Australian lawmakers are struggling to reach agreement over net-zero targets

The Nationals have continued to withhold their support for a net-zero plan despite a four-hour party meeting with the Liberals.

Nationals leader and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce says his party is “not at this stage” convinced that PM Scott Morrison’s plan won’t negatively impact rural areas.

Meanwhile, Morrison says that a substantial economic package for the regions is on the table as a way to try and convince the Nationals to get aboard.

Joyce believes there is a “lack of information” around the overall economic impact a net-zero target will have.

Although the deputy P-M could not confirm that his party will reach an agreement with the Liberals, he says that “discussions are ongoing” and “there are still questions the Nationals need to delve further into.”

Climate activists say the real burden to rural areas, is climate change.

Trump claims Iran’s military largely neutralized; tensions rise with attacks threatening air travel and oil shipping.

President Trump says Iran’s military capability has been largely neutralised, including its navy and air force, as the conflict in the Middle East intensifies. Iranian attacks have threatened commercial air travel and oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of wider economic fallout.

The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh has faced two attacks, while Gulf states worked to intercept further Iranian strikes. Officials report six U.S. troops killed and more than 700 deaths inside Iran as the exchange of fire escalates.

With global markets watching closely, the region remains on edge as military and diplomatic tensions show no signs of easing.
