At least 174 people die in Indonesia football stadium stampede

At least 174 people have died after a football stadium stampede in Indonesia.

The incident occurred after fans of the losing team stormed the pitch, and police responded with tear gas. This led to a stampede, which resulted in the deaths of at least 174 people.

The incident occurred at the Kanjuruhan stadium in the eastern city of Malang. Arema FC supporters stormed the pitch late on Saturday after their team lost 3-2 to Persebaya Surabaya.

This was the first loss in more than two decades to their bitter rival.

Police tried to persuade fans to return to the stands and fired tear gas after two officers were killed.

However, this only led to further panic and the stampede that followed. In total, at least 174 people have died as a result of the incident.

Response from Authorities

Authorities are still investigating the incident, and have not yet released a statement. This story is developing, and we will update this post as more information becomes available.
