The co-founder of Apple has publicly voiced his support for the right-to-repair movement, despite the tech giant opposing the idea

Steve Wozniack believes “we wouldn’t have an Apple had [he] not grown up in a very open technology world”.

The movement wants laws passed which allow users to access information and parts that would allow them to repair their own devices if and when required.

Currently, the right-to-repair laws that exist in both Europe and the US are limited to appliances and vehicles

And leaders of the movement say Apple is one of the key opponents to widening the legislation to encompass consumer electronics such as phones and computers.

Currently, Apple only allows repairs to be conducted by authorised technicians and does not provide service information or spare parts.

Apple has reportedly taken the approach of convincing lobbyists that repairing devices is dangerous for consumers.

Meanwhile, Wozniack says “companies inhibit the right to repair because it gives these companies power and control, over everything”.
