Russia freed U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich and ex-Marine Paul Whelan on Thursday. This was part of the largest prisoner exchange since the Cold War.
The White House said the U.S. negotiated the deal with Russia, Germany, and three other countries. The swap involved 24 prisoners. Sixteen moved from Russia to the West. Eight were sent from the West to Russia.
Germany confirmed one prisoner was Vadim Krasikov. He was convicted of murdering an exiled dissident in Berlin.
President Biden hailed the deal as a “feat of diplomacy and friendship.” He praised Washington’s allies for their “bold and brave decisions.” #trending
