A new report has found that some airlines risk failure if they don’t cut carbon emissions quicker in the next three to five years

Airlines are also at risk of shareholder activism at a time when major fund managers have publicly expressed concerns about climate change.

David Willis, an executive director at Envest, says there is pressure from “customers, governments and investors” to accelerate the journey to net-zero.

Several companies, like HSBC and S&P Global have already announced plans to cut business travel emissions by as much as 70 per cent.

Qantas Chief Executive Alan Joyce says that his airline was already developing a 2030 emissions target.

The report found the world’s top airlines emitted an average of 30 per cent less, per passenger kilometre flown in 2019.
