The United Nations has warned that Afghanistan could face a food crisis within one month, following the Taliban takeover
The UN warned that one in three Afghans could be left to go hungry, as the country’s Taliban rulers try to form a new government and run the nation.
Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN Humanitarian coordinator in Afghanistan said that more than half of the country’s children are already struggling to find their next meal.
Reports suggest that in recent days food prices in Afghanistan have increased by about 50 percent, while petrol has increased as much as 75 percent.
With most of the international aid shut, Alakbarov stated that that government services cannot function and public employees are unable to receive their salaries at this current point in time.
The Taliban has yet to form a new government, and their international recognition remains in question, preventing the resumption of foreign aid.
Earlier on Wednesday, Taliban militants took to the streets to show off their new armoured vehicles and weapons which were left behind by US and Afghan special forces
Clad in US military uniforms, Taliban militants have thrown a parade riding in tanks and armoured SUVs left by American and Afghan troops. The fighters waved the white Taliban flag from the vehicles.
