Accused Australian Parliament rapist to stand trial in Supreme Court

The man accused of raping a former political staffer at Australia’s Parliament house is due to stand trial in the Supreme Court

Bruce Lehrmann is accused of raping former staffer Brittany Higgins, and is now facing one charge of sexual intercourse without consent over the alleged incident in the office of a government minister at Parliament House in March 2019.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

During a brief hearing in the Magistrates Court of the ACT, both the defence and prosecution teams agreed to waive the committal hearing therefore allowing the matter to proceed to trial.

The 26 year-old accused appeared in court via phone link and the matter will now move to the Supreme Court of ACT on November 18.
