Universities are facing a surge in students using AI to cheat on assignments.

Tools like Chat GPT that remixes and paraphrases text from the internet gains popularity among lazy students.

Sydney University reported 330 assignments completed with AI assistance in 2023, while the University of NSW noted a similar trend. OpenAI’s ChatGPT engine, a driving force behind this AI trend, holds a dominant share of the industry website visits.

However, universities are ramping up efforts to detect and deter AI-facilitated cheating, with marking systems evolving alongside scrutiny from academic watchdogs.

Although specific figures on caught AI-assisted assignments were not disclosed by UNSW, there has been a notable increase in academic misconduct offences in 2023.
