The 80th Golden Globe Awards have taken place at the Beverly Hilton for the first time in two years
Jerrod Carmichael opened this year’s Golden Globe Awards with a string of controversial comments.
“I’ll tell you why I’m here…. I’m here ‘cos I’m black,” he said.
Carmichael was the host of the awards ceremony in which he said he became the “black face of the white embattled organisation”.
He also revealed how much he got paid for the role, which is understood to be $500,000.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has faced controversy in recent years, after questions emerged surrounding the ethics and qualifications of its members.
“This show the Golden Globe Awards did not air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which I won’t say they were a racist organisation, but they didn’t have a single black member until George Floyd died,” Mr Carmichael said.

Some of the best film and television shows of the past year were honoured at the 80th Golden Globes.
Streaming continues to make its mark on the industry, as BINGE series ‘White Lotus’ received the award for Best Limited Series.
Mike White accepted the award for the series, where he thanked his team.
“I would take a bullet for you guys, not in the heart but maybe the foot.”
“I was going to give this speech in Italian but I’m too drunk…there was no food.” he said.
