Uvalde school police chief fired

After three months after community outrage, the Uvalde school police chief has been fired

Pete Arredondo was the police chief responsible for law enforcement on the day 19 students and two teachers were gunned down in Uvalde.

The 24 May shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas revived U.S. debate around gun protections and violence.

Arredondo was terminated at a private gathering, where the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District’s board voted unanimously to end his contract. He did not attend the meeting over fears around his safety.

His attorney released a 17-page statement in which a request was made to “respectfully reinstate him”.

Arredondo’s departure follows the victim’s families demanding his resignation.

“If law enforcement’s job is to protect and serve, why didn’t they protect and serve my friends and teachers on May 24?”

ONE STUDENT ASKED THE BOARD

The chief Arredondo said he “does not believe the planned district meeting is safe”.

His attorney requested he should be able to exercise his “state rights to be armed”.
