New reports from The New York Times have revealed that former U-S president Donald Trump wanted to send about 250,000 troops to the southern border last year.

One of Trump’s political advisers urged the Homeland Security Department to plan for troops that would seal the entire 3200 km border with Mexico.

Additionally, Mr Trump also requested his aides to dispatch forces into Mexico to crack down on drug cartels.

The former president’s defense secretary was against the idea and was shocked to see it presented to officials at the Defense Department’s Northern Command without his authorisation.

The idea was dumped by the defense secretary after confrontations at the Pentagon.
