The Albanese government is now expected to maintain a debt figure above $1 trillion over the coming weeks.

As of last Friday, the Australian Office of Financial Management (AOFM) reported total debt issued at $983.7 billion.

The government added $13 billion through a syndication recently and plans to issue another $4 billion on Thursday.

Treasury anticipates the annual interest bill will reach $29.5 billion this year, increasing to $42.2 billion by the decade’s end.

The Parliamentary Budget Office indicates that interest costs will consume a larger share of government revenue in future years.

Net debt per capita is reportedly higher only than in the Northern Territory, ACT, and Victoria.

Long-term fiscal sustainability may be impacted by increasing interest payments.

Andrew Lilley, chief interest rate strategist at Barrenjoey, confirmed that federal debt will exceed $1 trillion on Thursday.

Interest rates have recently risen amid global market concerns.

In parliamentary sessions, Dr Chalmers defended the government’s management of the national debt post-pandemic.

The Coalition claims current debt levels result from irresponsible spending by the Labor government.

Polling shows significant public concern regarding the national debt.

S&P reaffirmed Australia’s AAA credit rating, but cautioned about potential downgrades if economic growth slows.

Treasury forecasts higher personal income tax collections, indicating Dr Chalmers will be the highest taxing treasurer.
