Aaron Young and James Manning discuss NRL’s record media rights deal and changes impacting Nine’s Today show

In Short:
– Aaron Young and James Manning discuss shifts in the Australian media, focusing on the NRL rights deal and Today show changes.
– NRL’s $5.3 billion deal is crucial for Nine and Foxtel, ensuring essential content amid challenges in breakfast television ratings.
In this episode of Media Movers, Ahron Young and media journalist James Manning discussed significant changes in the Australian media landscape, highlighting a landmark NRL rights deal and alterations at the Today show. The National Rugby League (NRL) has finalised a historic $5.3 billion media rights agreement over seven years, averaging $760 million annually.

This deal secures vital content for existing broadcasters Nine and Foxtel, with Nine holding rights to three games weekly, the State of Origin, and the exclusive Grand Final.

To finance these rights without revenue from sports betting advertising, Nine may need to raise advertising rates and create additional league-related programming during the week.

“Tier one” sports are increasingly crucial for free-to-air broadcasters as traditional content like drama and children’s programming diminishes from their line-ups.

The conversation also addressed shifts at Nine’s Today show, particularly following the departures of high-profile hosts.

The show faced a drop in ratings after Carl Stefanovic left. Analysts recommend assessing longer-term trends before concluding if viewer sentiment has shifted permanently.

Nine now faces the challenge of swiftly replacing both male and female co-hosts in the wake of these changes.
