An 8.2 magnitude earthquake has struck the coast of Alaska
The shallow earthquake struck the Alaskan peninsula at around 10.15 pm local time. Tsunami warnings have been posted across the region.
There were no immediate reports on loss of property or life. But the United States Geological Survey says the earthquake struck at a depth of 35 kilometers.
It is the largest earthquake to hit the United States since 1965. Alaska’s National Tsunami Warning Center issued warnings for several coastal regions, including a “tsunami watch” for Hawaii.
The tremor struck about 91 kilometers east-to-southeast of Perryville in Alaska. Several aftershocks were detected—including two above a magnitude of 6.0.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there are tsunami threats to Hawaii and the Pacific territory of Guam.
Locals are receiving earthquake and tsunami alerts on their smartphone devices.
“You in danger. Get away from coastal waters.”

New Zealand authorities are also on high alert and investigating the risk of a tsunami.
We are assessing whether the M8.1 ALASKA PENINSULA earthquake poses any tsunami threat to New Zealand. If a tsunami has been generated it is not likely to arrive in New Zealand for at least 12 hours hours.
