Will we see a more democratic future for filmmaking?

Published

The growth of audience-driven content is causing a rapid transformation and a more democratic model for the film industry.

Spearheaded by Decentralized Pictures, the panel at the NAB show in Las Vegas will discuss the challenges confronting aspiring filmmakers and examine the groundbreaking shift towards audience-driven content creation.

Headlining the panel discussion will be Decentralized Pictures Co-founder Roman Coppola, known for his work on acclaimed films such as “Moonrise Kingdom” and “The French Dispatch,” alongside the esteemed Actor Mena Suvari, celebrated for her roles in iconic movies like “American Beauty” and “American Pie,” as well as HBO’s “Six Feet Under.”

“The 2024 NAB Show is dedicated to embracing innovation and inclusivity, and the Decentralized Pictures panel perfectly encapsulates these values,” remarked Chris Brown, executive vice president and managing director of NAB Global Connections and Events. “This panel promises to offer fresh insights into the evolving landscape of filmmaking and explore how technology can empower diverse voices while captivating audiences in new and exciting ways.”

Industry insiders

Traditionally, entering the film industry necessitated navigating a labyrinth of gatekeepers and industry insiders.

Decentralised Pictures, however, confronts this challenge head-on with an approach that empowers audiences to actively shape the trajectory of cinema.

Through DCP’s innovative platform, filmmakers from all backgrounds can submit their ideas, with the community utilizing an “upvoting system” to express support.

Selected projects are then financed by DCP and its network of partners.

“DCP is committed to nurturing a new generation of talent, particularly from underserved and underrepresented communities,” explained Roman Coppola. “We provide them with opportunities to showcase their skills and share compelling stories that resonate with audiences worldwide.”

Industry experts

Scheduled for April 14 at 4 p.m. on the Main Stage, the panel titled “Decentralized Pictures and the Future of Fair and Transparent Filmmaking” will feature a diverse lineup of industry experts, including Leo Matchett, DCP co-founder and CEO, and Michael Musante, vice president of production and acquisitions at American Zoetrope, among others.
