Nearly 900,000 homes were without power as a storm ravaged Ontario and Quebec in Canada

At least eight people have been killed with wind gusts of up to 132 kilometres uprooting trees and even causing a boat to capsize.

Power companies say it will be up to a week before power is restored for all residents.

The thunderstorm saw emergency services swamped with calls with the dangerous conditions lasting for more than two hours.

In the town of Uxbridge, just north of Toronto, a state of emergency has been declared as authorities begin the cleanup.
