The organisation behind Wikipedia says it will stop accepting crypto donations

The ban follows a controversial vote recently held by the company, where 71 per cent of contributors called for the ban.

Users have previously raised concerns around the environmental impacts of Bitcoin mining, and the risk of scams.

Molly White is a Wikipedia editor, who says she is “really happy” with the outcome.

The Wikimedia Foundation says it will close its Bitpay account, which is the platform used to accept crypto contributions.

The company thanked users for the “in-depth discussion on cryptocurrencies and its advantages and drawbacks”.

But the company concedes it remains flexible about any future use or adoption of crypto.

“We will continue to monitor this issue, and appreciate the feedback and consideration given to this evolving matter by people across the Wikimedia movement.”

“We will remain flexible and responsive to the needs of volunteers and donors.”

Thank you again to everyone that has provided valuable input on this increasingly complex and shifting topic,” they explained.

The company says it has received over $130,000 worth of crypto donations last year.

It first started accepting Bitcoin and Ethereum in 2014.
