Why Pope Francis is asking for forgiveness

Published

on

Pope Francis has asked for forgiveness during his first public remarks in Canada.

Speaking on the grounds of a former school, the pontiff said his apology is the first step, and serious investigations into abuse must now happen.

The Pope is visiting Canada to say sorry for the church’s role in schools, which saw the assimilation of many indigenous children.

Policies at the government-funded schools were designed to destroy indigenous cultures and languages.

‘Sorrow and shame’ are some of the words used by Francis to express his feelings towards the actions of his predecessors.

He labeled the school system a “disastrous error” and asked for forgiveness “for the evil committed by so many Christians” against indigenous peoples.
