PARIS, July 13 (Reuters) – Ukraine and key Western allies announced an air-defence coalition to develop a new anti-ballistic missile system as a more affordable alternative to the U.S. Patriot system. At a summit in Paris, leaders from 10 countries and numerous defence firms formalised the Integrated Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition to enhance Europe’s defence against Russian missile threats.

New coalition formed

The coalition aims to integrate missile defence systems, addressing Ukraine’s urgent need for enhanced capabilities against incoming threats.

Ukraine has faced significant challenges in intercepting fast-moving missiles during recent Russian strikes.

Increased attacks from Russia have prompted Kyiv to target facilities within Russia, shifting the battlefield dynamics.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy attended the summit alongside around 25 leaders to discuss security guarantees that could support potential peace negotiations.

The discussions followed a NATO summit focused on both unity and ongoing support for Ukraine amid heightened military aggression from Russia.

Recent Russian missile attacks have resulted in numerous casualties within Ukraine.

Zelenskiy highlighted the importance of the Freyja project, aiming to create a European alternative to the Patriot system.

He stated enhancing Ukraine’s missile defence will increase the likelihood of negotiations with Russia.

Freyja aims to incorporate various European firms’ expertise for efficient and rapid development.

Around a dozen European companies, such as Eurosam and Thales, participated in discussions regarding this initiative.

Leaders expressed intentions to improve cooperation between defence industries across Europe.

French President Emmanuel Macron disclosed that Ukraine had placed an order for next-generation SAMP-T missiles, alongside permitting Ukrainian production of existing missile systems.

Ukraine is also scheduled to receive Rafale warplanes by 2028-2029 as part of expanded military support.

Joint military exercises are planned in neighbouring countries to further reinforce collective defence mechanisms.
