UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has escaped a fine, for now, as UK police charge 20 people over the Downing Street parties

The parties took place at the PM’s official place of residence while the rest of the nation was under strict pandemic lockdowns sparking widespread outrage.

British authorities say investigations are continuing as the first round of fines are issued and confirmed further penalty notices could be issued at a later date.

This all comes four months after Johnson and his office initially denied any events or gatherings were held at Downing Street.

This announcement by Met Police is the first confirmation the parties were in direct breech of the law at the time.

The “Partygate” scandal was the most serious threat to Johnson’s premiership to date.

Police say they “are making every effort to progress this investigation at speed and have completed a number of assessments”.
