The United States has officially briefed Congress on new intelligence regarding Russian nuclear capabilities.

The disclosure comes amid heightened tensions between the two nations and growing concerns over nuclear proliferation.

Citing a current and a former U.S. official, the New York Times reported the new intelligence was related to Russia’s attempts to develop a space-based anti-satellite nuclear weapon.

Current and former officials said the nuclear weapon was not in orbit.
