An American tourist has fallen into the crater of Mount Vesuvius to get his mobile phone

A 23-year-old man from Baltimore was hiking on an unauthorised part of the Italian mountain, when he fell into the crater to retrieve his phone.

The man was travelling with three relatives, while two British tourists were also spotted walking on the forbidden trail.

He scraped by with just a few bruises on his hands, arms and back.

Local authorities thanked rescue workers who staged a delicate rescue to recover the man from the active volcano.

He was treated by an ambulance that arrived at the scene but reportedly declined going to the hospital.

According to local authorities, the path along Mount Vesuvius has clear signs of forbidden access and danger warnings.

A prosector is believed to be deciding whether to proceed with a formal charge for invasion of public territory.
