Tokyo set to recognise same-sex partnerships
Tokyo will begin recognising same-sex partnerships from November
The capital becomes Japan’s largest city to recognise same-sex couples.
While Japan remains the only G7 nation to not support gay relationships, local authorities have made changes to recognise same-sex partnerships in recent times.
However, these changes don’t carry the same weight as marriage under Japanese law.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has been cautious about making any legal changes to recognise same-sex unions at a national level.
Taiwan is currently the only place in Asia with marriage equality, after making changes in 20-19.
