China determines what can be discussed on the country’s buzzing social media platforms and is now silencing views of citizens protesting against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Since the invasion started 3 weeks ago… comments on Chinese social media platforms Weibo, WeChat, and Douyin generally backed Russia and President Putin.

Posts against Putin or even advocating for peace quickly disappeared.

Jin Xing, a former popular talk show host, and China’s first openly transgender celebrity, told Reuters her account on Weibo was suspended last week

Weibo is China’s version of Twitter and she says that after she published two posts, referencing Putin as a “crazy Russian man” urging her followers to pray for peace, she was removed

This is a similar situation for thousands of other users who side with Ukraine on discussions about the war
