The U.S President’s encouragement to fight strict Texas abortion law

Following the US Supreme Court’s decision to opt-out of blocking the new Texas abortion bill, Democrats are scrambling to protect women’s rights

The new law has been criticised by both lawmakers and the Biden administration, with the White House chief of staff saying that the Justice Department is “looking for legal remedies” to uphold constitutional rights.

It comes as many Democrats voice their concerns about the law, saying it will push women to take their health into their own hands.

In May, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the bill.banning abortions statewide once a heartbeat is detected.

The bill came into effect last week and was immediately taken to the Supreme Court over concerns it is unconstitutional.

But the High Court rejected the request, and the bill was confirmed as law, with other states including Florida now also expected to enact similar legislation.

Meanwhile, US Senator Amy Klobuchar says the Supreme Court’s failure to act is not a surprise.
