The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has formally apologised to Sacheen Littlefeather for the mistreatment she received at the 1973 Awards Ceremony

Littlefeather refused to accept the Award for Best Actor on behalf of Marlon Brando, for his role in “The Godfather”, and in her speech, received a mixture of boos and cheers.

During the 60-second speech, Littlefeather spoke about the rights of Native Americans, whilst wearing Native American attire on stage.

Littlefeather will appear at a ceremony next month, and receive an in-person apology from the Academy, as well as discuss the future of Indigenous representation on screen.
