Sweden and Finland could soon join NATO

Published

It’s looking increasingly likely Finland and Sweden will be the newest members of NATO, with conversations about the move intensifying following Putin’s invasion of Ukraine

The recent NATO foreign ministerial meeting in Brussels was attended by ministers from both Stockholm and Helsinki.

Despite Putin’s goal to limit the spread of the strategic alliance, the invasion has only reinvigorated calls to further unify Europe.

The Russian President continues to demand NATO halts its eastern expansion and approving new memberships.

But NATO is opening its arms to new member nations, while public opinion in both Sweden and Finland about joining the defensive alliance has shifted significantly as the war wages on.

Finland’s prime minister says her country’s Parliament is set to discuss possible NATO membership “within the coming weeks”, with hopes discussions will wrap up “before midsummer.”
