A nursing monk seal with a young pup attacked a woman in Hawaii, pulling her under water and bit her

A 60-year-old woman has been attacked by an endangered seal at Waikiki beach in Hawaii.

The monk seal was protecting its young pup when it made the attack, pulling the swimmer under the water and biting her.

Bystanders shouted from the shore saying “get out!” and “somebody call the police.”

The woman is a teacher from California. She managed to escape with the help of other beachgoers who pulled her to shore. She had bite wounds on her face, arm, and back.

The man who recorded the incident, Markus Faigle, says this is not a seal attacking a human, that’s for me the totally wrong way of looking at this.”

“It’s a mama seal that’s protecting its pup, and there happens to be a human who is at the wrong place at the wrong time,” he says.

Thankfully, the woman was able to escape with the help of other beachgoers who pulled her to shore.
