Russia’s U.N. Ambassador has stormed out of a Security Council meeting after being blamed for sparking a global food crisis

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel says Russia is using food supplies as against the developing world, which has forced people into poverty.

“Let’s be honest, the Kremlin is using food supplies as a stealth missile against developing countries.”

But the Russian representative Vassily Nebenzia says Michel is spreading lies.

Ukraine conflict sparks food crisis

Ukraine is a large exporter of cooking oil as well as cereals. But the ongoing conflict has left food stuck at crucial ports in the war-torn country.

“Russia is solely responsible for this food crisis,” Michel says.

As Nebenzia left the chamber, he reportedly told Reuters he “couldn’t stay” because of “the lies that Charles Michel came here to distribute”.

Ukraine is a major supplier of cooking oil and grains.

Russia exports grains and fertiliser, which has caused the price of alternatives to soar in light of the crisis.

Michel is also accusing Russia of stealing grains and preventing crop planting because of its military activities in Ukraine.

“This is something that everyone is feeling across the globe,” says White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

It comes as inflation soars around the world, which is forcing food and gas prices to surge.

“We understand that prices—these gas prices, including food prices in particular—those two things, as we look at inflation and trying to make sure that we’re fighting inflation in every way that we can, is hurting families—is hurting families, especially as they sit around their kitchen table,” Jean-Pierre says.
