Russia showers Kyiv in ‘kamikaze’ drones in an attempt to cause mass casualties and fear across the capital.

It’s set to be a sleepless night for Kyiv residents, following Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s capital with Iranian-made kamikaze drones.

At least four people were killed as the weapons of mass destruction came crashing down across the city.

Ukrainian officials are pleading with their Western allies to supply further air defence systems to help destroy the drones before they make contact.

The country’s interior minister says Kyiv’s security forces successfully shot down 36 of the 42 attack drones launched by Russia.

30 of these were directed towards Kyiv, with the others on course for surrounding regions.

The mayor of Boryspil, on the outskirts of the capital, says the air defence system is working above the city. Officials are warning everyone to remain in shelters.

He says while the situation is under control, the threat remains.

In the U.S., White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has condemned Russia’s attacks.

Jean-Pierre would not confirm whether the Biden administration believes the war is entering a new phase, but admits the last few weeks has been an “escalation.”
