Putin won’t give Gorbachev a state funeral, or attend

President Vladimir Putin has denied a state funeral for the late Mikhail Gorbachev

Putin has confirmed he will not receive state funeral honours, but will get a modified version instead.

Gorbachev will be farewelled at a public ceremony in Moscow’s Hall of Columns, with the help of the state.

However, Putin won’t be in attendance at the funeral because of his work schedule.

However, Putin was seen placing roses beside the former leader’s coffin shortly after his death.

Gorbachev is remembered for ending the Cold War without bloodshed, forming arms reduction deals with the U.S. and removing the Iron Curtin which long divided Europe.

Gorbachev’s funeral will begin at 12pm on September 3.
